Eight residency positions are available for the coming residency year, with two positions designated for residents interested in acquiring advanced ambulatory practice skills. This comprehensive program provides training experiences in the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in an integrated health system. An individualized training plan, based on the resident’s entering level of knowledge, skills, and interests, is developed and adjusted throughout the year. While developing competence to provide patient-centered care in multiple patient care environments, PGY1 residents acquire substantial knowledge required for skillful problem solving and strengthen their professional values. Residents may select up to three electives (for example: ID Clinic, neuro critical care, nutrition support, behavioral health, nephrology, oncology, neonatology, or pediatrics). A wide variety of direct patient care training experiences is offered in ambulatory and acute settings. Each resident completes a research project, conducts a medication use evaluation, responds to emergencies like cardiac arrests, learns formulary and and medication safety processes, completes Lean Management System training, participates in multidisciplinary committees, and serves on one to two of the ten departmental quality teams. Additionally, all residents provide ACPE programs to pharmacy providers and team-teach a therapeutics course for the Doctor of Nursing Practice program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The residents, along with a Cone Health preceptor, are responsible for precepting students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, High Point University and Campbell University. Residents have direct patient care opportunities in identifying and resolving drug-related problems while completing required training in internal and ambulatory medicine, infectious disease, nephrology, cardiology, critical care, and research, primarily at Moses Cone Hospital. For residents interested in ambulatory care, a variety of elective clinical learning experiences are offered throughout the ambulatory services division of Cone Health, where their experiences may include providing tobacco cessation counseling, testing pulmonary function, and managing chronic diseases such as PVD, HIV, heart failure, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, cardiac arrhythmias, and thromboembolic disorders. Our integrated multi-campus pharmacy division works as a strategic partner with providers to drive medication-related evidence-based clinical care decisions and business outcomes. We educate all members of the clinical team on appropriate and safe medication use. Pharmacists are active participants in the Cone Health Centers of Excellence in cardiology, oncology, neurosciences, behavioral health, and women’s health. Decentralized, service-based pharmacists integrate obtaining electronic medication admission histories and pharmaceutical care with managing drug therapy; teaching patients, pharmacy learners, and physicians; and conducting research in HIV, oncology, critical care, and cardiology. Projects for the upcoming year include optimizing pharmacy operations in our new state-of-the-art facility, relocating women’s and neonatal services to the Moses Cone campus, enhancing robotics in the sterile products area, implementation of Lean principles intended to reduce waste and improve patient experiences, advancing collaborative pharmacist-physician practice throughout our system wide specialty pharmacy division, and establishing a meds-to-bed transitions of care program. Cone Health pharmacy departments offer PGY2 residency training in cardiology, infectious diseases, pediatrics, oncology, ambulatory care, and a PGY1/PGY2 health-system pharmacy administration
