Summary:
The Chief Nursing Officer of UNC Hospitals and clinics (to include the Academic Medical Center in Chapel Hill, Hillsborough hospital, & WakeBrook Behavioral Health) is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and monitoring overall operations for the division of nursing including quality, safety, and finance outcomes.
The CNO ensures compliance with patient care quality standards as it relates to the care provided to all age groups of patients ranging from neonate to geriatric across UNCH. This position has responsibility, authority and accountability for nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research activities.
The CNO functions at the senior leadership level to provide effective leadership and to coordinate leaders to deliver nursing care, treatment, and services. Assures a process for assessing competency of all nursing personnel. Maintains efficient and effective departmental operations while meeting required compliance with all state, federal, and local regulations laws, standards, and protocols. In collaboration with the Dean of the School of Nursing, directs the training and instruction of nursing students. This position reports to the President of UNC Hospitals.
Responsibilities:
1. Serves as the most senior nursing leader to the Triangle West hospitals and represents the Triangle West hospitals and clinics in UNC Health system planning and initiatives. Creates a positive, collaborative work environment. Develops and implements goals, objectives, policies and procedures. Directs personnel functions, including recruiting, hiring and retention of staff, and handling disciplinary actions. Ensures that operations comply with established standards and regulations. Prepares and oversees business reports, including annual budgets. Provides guidance to staff and acts as resource to colleagues.
2. Quality: Collaborates extensively with the CMO to develop, implement and monitor quality patient outcome metrics. Works with hospital leaders to ensure consistent patient outcomes in all settings. Provides quality services that meet the regulatory and accreditation requirements and ensures that services are delivered safely and efficaciously. Monitors unit performance improvement outcomes and guides staff and managers to use strategies to ensure quality and patient satisfaction. Leads managers to use strategies to improve employee satisfaction. Participates in sentinel events analysis and facilitates an environment that promotes a safe practice setting. Oversees nursing department performance improvement program, including the management of the personnel and performance improvement initiatives and strategies.
3. Leadership: Aligns work goals with organizational strategic direction and guides directors and direct reports in their goals. Leads formation of strategic goals for the department. Demonstrates corporate citizenship by participating in activities external to assigned departments. Demonstrates active support of organization initiatives and mentors directors and managers in these behaviors. Utilizes administrative, clinical and financial systems for data to facilitate decision-making. Leads and supports change efforts for improvement. Role models behaviors for nursing leaders and staff that promote the goals of the division of nursing and the organization; maintains effective working relationships with peers, medical staff, and direct reports. Arrives at decisions through a process of thorough analysis and thoughtfulness; makes decisions in a timely manner.
4. Financial Stewardship: Develops budget for assigned cost centers and assists directors and managers in development and monitoring of their cost centers. Works with CFO to analyze budgetary trends and nurse leaders in developing strategies for budget variances. Implements strategies to increase revenue and decrease costs and cost effectively manage personnel, supply and equipment resources. Makes necessary adjustments to ensure goals are achieved and/or meet budget projections.
5. Human Resources Stewardship: Recruits, selects, hires, coaches and uses appropriate actions with staff in accordance with UNCHCS policies and procedures. Maintains accountability for staff competencies and performance. Creates an environment conducive to staff development in both clinical and management expertise. Provides staff with performance feedback regularly and mentors staff in the development of professional growth opportunities and goals. Conducts regular staff meetings to facilitate communication of pertinent information and provides opportunities for feedback from managers and staff. Recognizes and rewards staff for performance and celebrates successes. Encourages staff and managers to identify opportunities for improvement. Implements strategies to improve employee satisfaction inclusive of strategies to involve employees in decision-making.
