The Department of Pediatrics seeks to hire a faculty member to join the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine (GPAM) at the University of North Carolina. Applicants who are board-certified or board-eligible in Adolescent Medicine with broad clinical experience or training are strongly preferred. This position is an open-rank, fixed term faculty position appointed in the School of Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill.
This position will be clinically based in Butner, NC at the Youth Behavioral Hospital (YBH). The YBH facility is a newly established and innovative 50 plus patient child and adolescent psychiatric hospital with four individual specialized units serving the children and families. This faculty member will function as a core and vital leader of medical services for adolescents at YBH. The successful candidate will have strong experience in the evaluation and management of medical conditions that may arise in youth who are hospitalized for psychiatric purposes. Examples include comprehensive medical assessment for adolescents, addressing medical needs related to sexual activity, providing consultation on the medical management of chronic conditions for hospitalized youth, and providing guidance on the management of acute medical conditions that arise during psychiatric hospitalization, including transfer to a higher level of medical care when needed. A percentage of this position will involve the supervision of medical residents and advanced practice providers; a successful applicant will have a history demonstrating expertise in this set of skills.
As a faculty member, this person will join a program that includes board certified Adolescent Medicine specialists, nurse practitioners, LCSWs, and other physicians with an interest in adolescent care. In addition to work at YBH, this position may include opportunities to work in additional adolescent-focused clinical settings in Raleigh and Chapel Hill including a Gender Wellness Clinic, a youth detention center, a Diagnostic clinic with a high proportion of adolescents with functional syndromes, a Young Women and Girl's clinic for menstrual disorders, an eating disorder treatment center and other multi-specialty clinics based on individual interests.
In addition to clinical programs, the division and institution have important research opportunities in adolescent health. Research interests in the section include evaluation of the impact of telehealth services on adolescent consent and confidentiality, use of adolescent-friendly decision-making tools related to contraceptive options and evaluation of factors impacting reproductive health autonomy in adolescents. In addition, GPAM division research focus includes the impact of social and contextual factors on health, childhood adversity, and health inequities. The Gillings School of Public Health and the Sheps Center for Health Services Research offer opportunities for broader adolescent health research.
The GPAM division is one of the largest divisions in the Department of Pediatrics and in addition to Adolescent Medicine includes Primary Care, Developmental Behavioral health, and Child Abuse pediatrics.
